When you hear the name Shakespeare, who do you think he was? Do you think that he was some crazy writer that made up words and phrases because he wanted to? Or did you think he was a mastermind and an idol for English literature? If you looked at everyones reasons, Im sure that the pros would outweigh the cons. The main reason being is that the globe theatre is still alive today, along with his words, phrases, sonnets and plays, which are so relevant even today. Shakespeare’s impact in the past has been attracting millions of people from around the world to see the influence he has had on the English language so far.
You may have heard about the globe theatre, its a massive building that has been burned down multiple times but is still standing strong. Do you think that people wouldve kept fighting for something they didnt like or enjoy? Shakespeare’s plays are entertaining because they connect with the audience through the use of his characters’ emotions. Shakespeare’s characters and audience may not have had the same stories but they experience similar feelings and reactions. I find that Shakespeare leaves a mark in everyone in some way, for me his language seems so different that it leaves me to think about what on earth he was saying during his texts long after theyve concluded.
Shakespeare has created over at least 1,700 words and phrases that are still being used everyday. Examples of these phrases and words include; fair play, good riddance, night owl, too much of a good thing, lonely and unreal. He has made most of these words by altering nouns to change them into verbs so his poem could meet the requirements of 10 syllables for the iambic pentameter, but Shakespeare didnt stop there, he kept thinking about how he should make the audience feel. During tragic events in his ballads and plays Shakespeare would estimate the rhythm of the heartbeat like it would be in real life and used them to change the beats of the poems. He didnt just talk about the heart, he followed the beat of it. This made the audience feel similar emotions to the characters Shakespeare writes about. Even I found my own interest in his poems! Shakespeare was very smart and used his knowledge to his advantage to further immerse a reader into his texts.
You may not realise it, but some of the most popular texts include adaptations from Shakespeare, some examples include; Taylor Swifts song – Love Story (2008), the movie The Lion King (1994) and the movie Shes The Man (2006). Yeah, I know what youre thinking, all of these texts use the basic story or moral of Shakespeares sonnets and plays while changing it into different forms to make it even more relevant to people today. Adaptations are another reason why people realise that they still need to use Shakespeare’s interesting stories even 400 years after he died.
Shakespeare has modelled english literature around the world and has made one of the biggest impacts over all forms of texts including movies, poems, sonnets, plays and songs. Which begs the question doth thee bethink we shouldst still studyeth shakespeare? Sorry will my Shakespearean leave you hanging? Let me rephrase it for you; Do you think we should still study shakespeare?
