Delving into the history of mankind and the nations that existed and still exist, the question arises as to what constitutes a nation. In my opinion, language is one of the strongest factors that make a nation. The role of significance embraced by the aspect of language can be traced through the growth of this or that culture throughout history. A great example is Switzerland. Switzerland presents this idea through its variety of official languages across the country, represented through influences from an abundance of European cultures. Specifically, it has four official languages, including German, French, Italian and Romansh. The diversity in Switzerland’s language has shaped the country into forming its own culture including aspects of others. In this case, language holds great significance in the country, as Switzerlands history and culture were shaped by the aspects of a variety of European languages. Thus resulting in the aspect of a diverse identity across Switzerland.
Secondly, belief systems often provide individuals the opportunity to connect through a sense of belonging and kinship. Let’s take the example of religious feelings. The sense of religion in a country builds stronger connections between citizens, portraying that a stronger sense of nationalism throughout the country may be represented. To further this aspect, religion can also allow greater values to be represented through everyday life. An example could be how Christians in Christian nations hold great value towards justice and thankfulness. These values can play large roles in respect and pride for the country. Due to the significance of religion, citizens can have a sense of belonging and further their values to other societies.
Additionally, geography is another important factor that makes a nation. Let’s take Switzerland as an example again. Its geography has allowed many individuals to experience a sense of beauty and vanity. To further this aspect, Switzerland has a great variety in geography ranging from mountains to lakes. A common attraction in Switzerland is the Alps mountains that stretch across a great amount of Europe. These mountains border around Switzerland and bring a sense of originality and beauty to the country. It should be noted that the significance of geography relates not only to the visual world of a country but also to the aspect of history that relates to factors such as the culture and spirituality of the land. As a result, geography engages a sense of beauty and pride in a country, and geography also allows for the expansion in understanding of past events and history.
Finally, culture is something that also plays a key role in making a nation. The importance of culture to a nation is based on the foundation of a country’s identity and what it is known for around the world. These can be some typical traditions (for example, the Christian tradition of Easter, the celebration of the Day of the Dead by Mexicans or Halloween by Americans, etc.), or general symbols that have been represented throughout the culture (like chocolate and cheeses in Switzerland, for example).
Summing up, I believe that the four greatest aspects that make up a nation are language, religion, geography, and culture, as these four subjects reflect largely on the values and beliefs of any country.
