The successful operation of an organization largely depends on the effective leadership. Transformational leadership is agreed to be an effective management style. It focuses on the active leadership of a manager and his ability to create a team with common goals (Braun, Peus, Weisweiler & Frey, 2013). From my point of view, transformational leadership implies that a leader serves as an example for his or her employees. This leader is an excellent psychologist who can inspire the followers and gain the true trust and respect.
I feel that I can fit this position because I have always been good at inspiring people. I believe that every single specialist can come up with a unique initiative that will help the team to achieve common objectives. The important issue here is the precedent management. If the previous nurse manager was a transactional leader, I might face certain difficulties since the nurses are likely to be accustomed to another management style. Nevertheless, I am sure that the transformational leadership will be much more successful and employees will be satisfied with my work and our joint results.
As a new head nurse I am expected to have a unit assessment plan including the key points essential for the units successful functioning: schedule, plan implementation, the individual performance of the employees, motivation, qualification, and so on.
The increasing RN retention problem, which I have been informed about, requires determining the causes. For that reason, I will check the RNs workload, schedule, salary and will hold the discussion of the problem with my colleagues, following the shared government policy of the nursing department. I believe that collaborative decision-making leads to positive outcomes in most cases. Besides, it will allow me to be aware of the nurses opinion, as well as to share my solutions to particular problems. In this context, transformational leadership seems to be parallel with shared government policy.
