The Board of Directors of Vila Health has put forth an initiative regarding diversity, equity, inclusion, and cultural competency. They need your input as the new administrator before finalizing their decision. Reflect on the diversity of your workforce, and their cultural competency, and make a determination if your workforce is reflective of the community you serve.
Picture this: An English as a second language person comes into the Vila Health Medical Center Emergency Room complaining of “hot” pain in her abdominal region. Your attending physician suspects appendicitis, yet the patient is insisting on a “cold” remedy. The attending physician does not understand her, and due to his lack of understanding of the patient’s cultural belief in a balanced relationship between hot and cold, wants to send her for a psychiatric consult for delusions. How stressful! As a result, you are very concerned about the patient’s care and the lack of cultural competency of the attending physician.
Cultural awareness is a vital aspect of healthcare administration and providing excellent care for the community. This week, we will focus on the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We will also look at different types of biases (implicit, explicit, racial, etc.).
