Leadership is an exceptionally crucial ability in all areas of life, including business. Leaders influence others and can shape the direction of the development of their organization. The TED talk by Drew Dudley entitled Everyday Leadership is dedicated to the concept of small-scale leadership and how people can impact each others lives without even realizing it. Meanwhile, Chapter 11, Effective Leadership in the Organization, is concerned with the nature and theories of leadership as well leadership behavior and practices.
The ideas conveyed in the TED talk under consideration align well with the concepts from Chapter 11 of the textbook. According to Dudley (2010), leadership should not be viewed as an ability that needs to be earned and can lead to revolutionary changes in the life of society. Instead, it is the ability to inspire other people to make small but significant changes to their lives (Dudley, 2010). Meanwhile, Bierman et al. (2018) define leadership as the process of influencing others for them to achieve a specific goal. In addition, both the video and the textbook emphasize the importance of charisma and referent power in leadership, as authentic leaders can inspire great admiration and desire to emulate them (Bierman et al., 2018). An example of a person inspiring others without even realizing it is the grandmother of my classmate who enrolled in the university at the age of 73. Her enrollment led to many of my classmates worried about their chances and considering not going to university, following through with their plans for further education.
In summary, leadership is an invaluable ability that can result in immeasurable changes being made to the lives of others or a direction of development for a business or organization. However, it should not be viewed as an attainable quality as such aspects of leadership as charisma and referent power can be developed. In addition, different mundane actions can serve as an inspiration to others.
