I open my eyes. I smile. Today was going to be an incomparable day.
24th of June 2017 – The Stone Roses Glasgow. Their last ever gig and I was going to be there, one of the most extraordinary bands in the world and I was going to see them. I was as happy as ever.
So as you do on the morning of something like this (or every day for me) I get up and I turn on my speaker, Made of Stone one of my favourite roses tunes blares as I lay there with great contentment on my bed while the hairs on my neck stick up and my heart beats with a great force.
I sing to myself in the mirror and then I start to get ready. I brush my candy-floss-coloured hair and pick out an outfit while my brother bangs through my room wall telling me to turn my music down, which only makes me turn it up louder. I continue getting ready matching my eyes to my hair and my shoes to my jacket, everything was going perfectly. I finish getting ready and sit down with my friends just listening to music and getting excited (if it’s possible to be more excited).
It gets to about 4:00 p.m. we decide its time to head into the gig, my friends and I jump into our taxi singing away and talking to the taxi driver when we realise through all our excitement we have forgotten our tickets and have to turn back, we head back, get the tickets and go back into the station.
We then arrive at the station and the place is full of roses fans singing and laughing and clinking their drinks together at every opportunity. Everything was amazing. Absolutely everything. Even the weather, which is very rare for Glasgow.
The train comes and everyone squeezes on. The full train is just so lively and everyone is buzzing. We get off the train and follow the chanting crowd all the way to Hampden Park.
We arrive outside Hampden waiting in the queue to be allowed in, we can hear the atmosphere from outside and it is incredible, we get up to the gate and do the usual routine for a gig scan and pat, scan and pat, scan and pat. We get in and the atmosphere is even better inside. Everyone is laughing and singing with their friends enjoying this unbelievable moment.
We make our way closer to the front looking for a good spot, I felt so ecstatic. We find a good spot and dance to the music playing waiting for the support act – Primal Scream. We meet some more friends inside and the wait goes on for The Stone Roses.
The support act Primal Scream comes on and I dance away and sing along to their songs and they finally go off. All I can think about is the Roses. I can see the stage getting set up and the anticipation is getting stronger. It still feels almost like a dream, I was ready to burst with excitement.
Twenty minutes go by and then I hear the crowd getting louder chanting and cheering everywhere I looked I could just see pints, drinks, cups, people laughing with their friends, people singing and dancing to their favourite songs, people taking photos capturing this amazing day. The crowd starts to roar and everyone goes forward. I’ve never enjoyed a pint thrown over me so much in my life and then I hear it GLASGOW in the strong Manchester accent and everyone goes uncontrollably wild. The full place fills with the smoke from the smoke bombs of all colours, I hear the intro to ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ and my friend pulls me onto his shoulders and at that moment it is absolutely biblical. As I wave my hands through the air, the colours from the smoke bombs surround me and cling to me.
I can not describe the feeling. I could feel every vein in my body intensified. This was the best moment of my life. I couldnt believe I was there. Me, at The Stone Roses’ last-ever gig. It was absolutely stunning.
The day turns to night and they play their last song. The sun sets just behind the stage and it looks and sounds absolutely beautiful. I still have that same smile on my face I woke up with, it’s even bigger now. They come to the front of the stage and everyone in the place is going insane. They walk off and everyone stays for a while longer just living in that moment, soaking every bit of satisfaction in, breathing every breath that little bit more grateful, heavier, happier.
I have been to many gigs in my life but nothing compares to this day, I still get that same feeling every time I hear their songs, every time someone mentions their name. I relive that moment and that day over and over again and it gets better every time.
