The approach to Bachs music throughout the Swinging Bach performance is unique in that it has allowed for the mixture of contemporary and classic in one performance. The jazz-like style introduced throughout the songs can be seen as a type of crossover with Bachs music and a new interpretation. Crossovers are not usually regarded warmly as they may often dilute the original work in a way that does not contribute to its initial value. However, a number of pieces during the performance approached Bach respectfully while introducing a new style and taking on the classic works (Swinging Bach 2011). As such, I find that this was the feature that really distinguished the performances of the festival from other reproductions of Bachs work.
The performances were also very engaging for the audience. This could be a factor in the surprising and memorable interpretations of Bach or the pace of the jazz pieces presented in the festival. The songs selected are likely to be recognized by most concert-goers which is likely to increase the excitement felt during the performances. Even though most of the pieces were all a form of crossover music, each take on the classical pieces was unique and continued to keep the audience engaged. Personally, I did not prefer any of the interpretations of Bach to his original work. However, I identify that there is value in experimentation and the production of original takes on classical pieces and concepts. As such, I enjoyed the various attempts made by the musicians and their interpretation of Bachs work. It is also effective in introducing Bach to new listeners or individuals who are apprehensive about classical music initially.
