Oral Health and How Stress Can Be Associated
Many people all over the world go through some sort of mental health issues. Mental
health can take a toll on one’s day-to-day life. Long term stress, depression, and even
anxiety can cause negative impacts on one’s oral health.
Long term stress, anxiety, etc. can negatively impact one’s oral health in many ways.
Poor homecare caused by stress can lead to unhealthy habits and eating. Poor eating
habits can contribute to tooth decay due to the acidity of certain foods and drinks. Many
times when stressed, we tend to procrastinate on our daily duties. Simple things like
flossing and brushing can become something that tends to be ignored. Becoming
neglectful towards brushing and flossing can lead to tooth decay, periodontal disease, and
low self esteem. Tooth decay can be fixed most of the time with restorative procedures
such as fillings, crowns and even root canals if they decay is extensive. As for periodontal
disease, that is a disease that can lead to many issues throughout the body. A diagnosis of
Periodontal disease mainly comes from someone who has neglected themselves over
time. Many patients have procrastinated getting their routine cleanings done or have not
done their part when it comes to home care. Periodontal disease comes from bacteria
eating away at the bone which causes mobility of the teeth and causes inflammation of the
gums. Studies have shown that long term stress can have effects on children and adults
and are at higher risk for oral and systemic diseases.
