Background:
The discovery of penicillin in 1928 by Alexander Fleming spurred a revolution in treating infectious diseases. This was accelerated in the aftermath of WWII. Since then, the vast majority of public health campaigns have been focused on the elimination of infectious diseases and pathogens. The aforementioned factor, the extensive public health campaigns (vaccines), and the Green Revolution resulted in a sharp decline of infectious diseases and increased life expectancy around the globe.
By the turn of the century, the common assumption was the defeat of pathogens followed by a sense of security which resulted in accelerating globalization and trade around the world with a billion people crossing international borders every year. Soon the prosperity, lower price of food and unprecedented technological advancements found a substitute for infectious disease, “Chronics”- diseases such as heart diseases, cancer and Alzheimer’s.
As Laurie Garrett said, “The grandiose optimism rested on two false assumptions: that microbes were biologically stationary targets and that diseases could be geographically sequestered. Each contributed to the smug sense of immunity from infectious diseases that characterized health professionals in North America and Europe”.
However, the 2003 outbreak of Sever Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), the 2012 outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), and the 2014 Ebola outbreak should have been wake-up calls that we are not yet over the era of pathogens and infectious diseases. Ostensibly, our infectious disease policies have proven to be inadequate in the face of the ongoing pandemic of COVID-19.
