I believe that Tom is the protagonist of the play by Tennessee. The play revolves around the lives of three key characters. The three characters include Tom, Laura and Amanda. Tom encounters many challenges in his life and he tries everything possible to have a new kind of life. The author of the play has focused on the external and internal conflicts faced by Tom and the best approaches to deal with them. The story explains how Tom appears disturbed by several things in his life. He is unable to undertake his responsibilities in life thereby making it impossible for him to achieve his dreams. The play also shows that Tom is disparate with his sister. The portrayal of Tom in the play makes him the possible protagonist in the story.

In every scene of the play, Tom is restless and resentful. This makes it easier for the reader to understand the mystery faced by Tom throughout the play. Most of the conflicts faced by Tom develop from his disturbed relationships with Amanda and Laura. It is, therefore, acknowledgeable that everything in the play revolves around Tom thus making him the favorable protagonist of the story. The story narrates much about Toms life and the ability to change his life. However, he realizes that it is impossible to live a new life because of all the challenges he is facing. This presentation dissolves any doubt that any other character in the play can be the protagonist.

The other important observation is that Tom appears in the play as two characters in the story. The first one is Tom who is the narrator of the story and the young man starring the memory of the narrator. Tom the narrator as presented in the story seems to present the narration in a retrospective approach after he had left his home. The kind of contrast and analysis presented between the two plays an important role in the formulation of the best theme of this play. From the story, we observe that Tom decided to leave his sister behind but the outstanding thing is that he did not escape. This presentation shows that Tom was unable to escape his identity or past. The final speech given at the end of the play by Tom makes it easier for the reader to identify Tom as the protagonist of the play by Williams.

However, the interesting thing about the play is that Laura is the main character of the play. The play is deeply concerned about Laura including the name itself. She is a fragile and delicate character throughout the play. The role of Laura in the play is to develop the themes of the story. The most important thing from this play is that it presents Laura and Tom as important characters in the development of the story. Depending on how the reader interprets the play, it is notable that there is much about Tom and the reason he is the protagonist of the play. The other thing is that the story does not offer an antagonist. While Tom is the major protagonist of the play, Laura and Amanda are useful to explain the themes and ideas of the story further.
