PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. AND WRITE THE PAPER EXACTLY LIKE THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE ASKING YOU TO DO. I’ve included the chapters from the readings.
This option requires you to describe and defend a philosophical position on the existence of one or both of two kinds of possible gods – a creator deity, and a moral deity. There are many arguments and theory in the assigned readings you can choose from, or you can attempt to develop a theory of your own. Your theory should answer ALL of the following questions: Does one or more gods, which either created the cosmos or are a source of perfect moral guidance (or both) exist? If so, what arguments support the claim that such a thing exists? If not, what do you take to be the best argument in support of such a thing, and why does this argument fail? Your theory must specify which of the three types of gods it is concerning: 1) god who created the cosmos, 2) god who is a source of moral guidance for humans, or 3) god who is both of these things. You can include other details about the god in question if you wish, but your argument must focus on and address one of these core qualities. You must then defend your theory from at least one objection. This means you need to voice a reason that someone who rejects your theory might have for rejecting it, presenting their objection clearly and accurately, and then say how your theory could respond to, dispose of, or “survive” this counterargument.
The first part of your essay will be graded primarily on its coherence or accuracy, and on its clarity. If you are summarizing a view you’ve read about, then the accuracy standard is applied, as you must summarize it as the original authors would want it summarized. If you are creating your own argument, then the focus is coherence – each part of the argument must strengthen each other part, and no parts should be contradictory to each other. Clarity means that a person not familiar with the view already would be able to easily understand it based on what you have written.
The second part of your essay will be graded primarily on clarity and quality. Clarity means presenting your counterargument and response in such a way that a reader will not be confused as to what the objection is and how your chosen theory responds to that objection. Quality means that both the objection and response to it are well-defended with a logically well-formed arguments that contain true or plausible premises, as we learned in class.
P.S we’re reading from the book “DOES THE CENTER HOLD? AN INTRODUCTION TO WESTEREN PHILOSOPHY”
