Background

The issue of obesity remains at the top of the current health concerns (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016). Numerous interventions have been designed to manage the needs of overweight patients, yet their efficacy varies (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestion and Kidney Diseases, 2012).

Objectives

The goal of the paper is to compare the effects of the psychological intervention based on the use of the Volitional Help Sheets as the tool for addressing the needs of overweight patients to the approach implying no intervention whatsoever.

PICOT

In the overweight adult population (P) utilizing a psychological intervention using the Volitional Help Sheets to change health behavior (I) compared to no psychological intervention (C) can help reduce the overweight prevalence of this population (O) in the next three months (T).

Methods

The Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) approach will be used as the theoretical foundation for the analysis. The study will be conducted as quantitative research since the PICOT question requires quantifying the research outcomes for a comparison between the two frameworks (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2016).

Results

Incorporating the BMI tool as the means of identifying a problem may serve as the starting point. Additionally, for the patient to recognize the problem, a nurse must use proper wording (e.g., excess weight, unhealthy weight, etc. (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestion and Kidney Diseases, 2012)). Additionally, the lack of training provided for nurses may serve as the reason for a drop in intervention success. Similarly, the lack of time or poor time management prevents from designing an elaborate nursing strategy to meet the needs of patients with weight issues.

It is expected that the Volitional Help Sheets will prove to be rather efficient in helping people with obesity issues manage their problems in a manner as efficiently as possible. It should be borne in mind, though, that the sheets should be used along with another powerful tool for enhancing motivation. Furthermore, the implications of the study point directly to the opportunities for enhancing awareness among the target members of the population, encouraging them to accept a healthy lifestyle.

Significance

The research may provide premises for the design of a new and more efficient nursing strategy for obesity issues management. However, costs for running the necessary tests, providing the target population with the required therapy, etc., will be taken. Nevertheless, a sustainable approach to cost management will help address the issue.
