The United States is a multinational country, which sometimes creates racial concerns. Even though Indian Americans are the indigenous population of this territory, they have experienced much discrimination since the Europeans came to North America. This discrimination has manifested itself in various aspects, including the legal and sporting sphere. Consequently, the main task of the given essay is to comment on the essential racial challenges that have been faced by Indian Americans.
To begin with, I believe that any policies that create a basis for racial discrimination are wrong and harmful. It equally refers to the governments requirements for recognizing Native ancestry and the one-drop rules affecting Black Americans. People face different attitudes because of their ethnicity, and this fact contributes to discrimination.
It is necessary to mention that Native Americans have already suffered from unfair legislation, including the Major Crimes Act (1885), General Allotment Act (1887), Indian Citizenship Act (1924), and others (Native Americans 173). Consequently, the US government gained control over the Native Indians long ago.
In addition to that, there is a significant problem with using Native Americans as team mascots because it is a sign of disrespect to the dignity of such people. In the United States, it is the only ethnic group that is used as mascots, which introduces racial issues (Native Americans 164). That is why the National Collegiate Athletic Association adopted a resolution to abandon the use of representatives of ethnic minorities as mascots. This proposal should have solved the given racial issue and improved the situation of Native Americans in the United States. Thus, the information above has shown that American Indians suffer from racial discrimination, but practical steps are taken to improve the situation.
