Evidence-based practice (EBP)
According to Wilson & Austria (2021), evidence-based practice (EBP) is applying or translating research findings into our daily patient care practices and clinical decision-making. In addition, EBP also involves integrating the best available evidence with clinical knowledge and expertise while considering patients’ unique needs and personal preferences (Wilson & Austria, 2021). The goal of EBP is to utilize the best research evidence that aims to improve patient care and outcomes. As healthcare professionals, we utilize EBP regularly. Evidence-based practice can also be applied in a variety of healthcare settings. The evidence of this approach is evident in clinical settings (Feder, 2024). For example, infection control, oxygen administration, blood transfusions, alarm fatigue reduction, and more. In a clinical setting, EBP requires specific steps to help healthcare providers make the best decisions (Feder, 2024).
Healthcare Organization’s Website
The professional healthcare organization’s website of my choice is The Joint Commission. Founded in 1951, The Joint Commission seeks to improve healthcare for the public continuously, in collaboration with other stakeholders, by evaluating healthcare organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value (The Joint Commission, 2024). The Joint Commission analyzes evidence-based data and works with industry leaders and clinicians to determine ways to help drive quality initiatives and patient safety in healthcare. Usually, when the Joint Commission arrives at any healthcare facility, the staff members would be frantic. However, it is imperative for such surveys to ensure quality, safety, compliance, and continuous improvement in healthcare delivery. The Joint Commission’s vision is that all people experience the safest, highest quality, best-value healthcare across all settings (The Joint Commission, 2024). On The Joint Commission’s website, EBP is implicitly referenced throughout the information regarding their standards and accreditation requirements, particularly when discussing quality improvement initiatives and patient safety goals, as the Joint Commission emphasizes using evidence-based practices to ensure high-quality patient care.
The Joint Commission grounded in EBP
The Joint Commission is recognized as grounded in evidence-based practice (EBP) because its accreditation standards and evaluation processes are designed to encourage healthcare organizations to base their practices on the best available scientific evidence, promoting quality improvement and patient safety by requiring them to identify, implement, and monitor evidence-based interventions across various aspects of patient care (The Joint Commission, 2024). Listed below are key points supporting this perspective:
Focus on data-driven decision making
Emphasis on patient safety goals
Regular standard updates
Evidence-based intervention identification
Finally, the information I’ve discovered on The Joint Commission’s website has changed my perception in many ways. For example, The Joint Commission demonstrates its commitment to high-quality patient care and safety culture. In June 2018, the Joint Commission began improving its safety culture assessment in hospitals, including critical access hospitals. The focus on safety culture stems from the feedback of institutions accredited by The Joint Commission and its surveyors, both of which indicated that evaluating and improving how safety culture was assessed during the survey process was critical in the journey toward high reliability in healthcare (Pellegrini, 2018). That said, The Joint Commission is significant since it aids in the organization and reinforcement of patient safety.
