I AM ARGUING:
That the most pragmatic solution is an in-between, “managed” strategy that tries to support American production/exports without outright protectionism;
Reflect on the prompt and write 500-600 words. (You may go a bit over, but don’t go way over 600).
PROMPT: Agree or disagree with this prompt: for the good of Americans, the United States should work to preserve an open, barrier-free global economy. (for conext i disagree with this statement and advocate for a mixture of protectionalism and international trade)
GUIDANCE: To approach this assignment, make sure that you consider:
1) the textbook reading for Fri. Nov. 22 about the challenges of economic “rents” versus “distributional problems”; This is important! In my essay I need terminology surrounding the tradeoff between rents and distrivution (some vocab: job scarcity, offshoring, liberalization, industry policy, protectionism, privitization, competition policy)
2) your notes from the lecture on Mon. Nov. 25, which connects the rents/distribution trade-off to examples in foreign trade policy (or watch again in the the video recording)
3) the discussion of foreign trade issues in the School of Life video assigned for Sun. Nov. 24, “How to Enrich a Country: Free Trade or Protectionism?”
4) the four readings for Mon. Nov. 25 (all found under Modules for Nov. 25):
the NPR story on how Biden has maintained some of Trump’s trade policy vis-à-vis China https://www.npr.org/2021/10/04/1043027789/biden-is-keeping-key-parts-of-trumps-china-trade-policy-heres-why
the Economist story on Biden’s turn to “place-based industrial policy” https://www.economist.com/united-states/2023/07/27/the-biden-administration-embraces-place-based-industrial-policy
Bernie Sanders’ web page on “trade and US jobs”
https://feelthebern.org/bernie-sanders-on-trade/
5) An optional useful resource about the pros and cons of free trade is here: https://www.thoughtco.com/free-trade-definition-theories-4571024Links to an external site.
Your core task is to consider how much you buy the pro-free-trade argument featured in the School of Life video, versus how much you think that free trade isn’t the best strategy for the United States today. You could focus entirely on the question of free trade with China, if you like, or you may pitch your essay more broadly. (The Sanders webpage considers trade with Mexico, for example, and the North American Free Trade Agreement, NAFTA. Again, you don’t have to mention these other contexts/examples, but you may).
Be sure that your essay does the following:
Summarizes both the case for free trade and what you see as key arguments against it.
Takes a position in this debate, making clear if you are supporting a strategy of very free trade, a strategy that involves some direct protectionism, or maybe an in-between, “managed” strategy that tries to support American production/exports without outright protectionism;
makes explicit reference to at least three of the readings for Nov. 25. You may just use parenthetical cites as follows: (Khalid 2021), (NYT 2022), (Economist 2023), (Sanders webpage). It is fine to just cite each one once, or you may cite them more than once—whatever best fits with your arguments.
You may also bring in other facts or sources if you like, but this is not required. If you do cite another source, or mention a non-obvious fact from another source, please cite a source at the end of your essay. Any common citation format is acceptable.
If you argue for either a protectionist or “managed” strategy, try to be concrete enough to distinguish one of these options from the other. That is, if you are arguing for protectionism, specify at least some steps you could take to support US firms directly, maybe including tariffs or quotas or strong subsidies. If you are arguing for managed trade, note explicitly that you’re talking about targeted and indirect supports for US firms (perhaps including examples of these from lecture and readings).
Two general pieces of advice:
Explain rather than assert.
Spell out your points so that the reader sees why you think that a certain electoral rule and its effects are good or bad. A good device is to try your argument out on a roommate or friend who isn’t in the class, to see if they get what you’re saying. Or try to imagine explaining your argument to someone who doesn’t know about the assignment or the class context.
Think about objections to your argument and address them. Sometimes a very clear argument heads off objections directly, but you can also state the most likely objection and then answer it.
This assignment will be graded as a function of:
Clarity and accuracy of summaries of the arguments for and against free trade.
Clarity of your own position: what are you arguing for?
Clarity, relevance and persuasiveness of arguments supporting your position, including recognizing and handling potential objections.
Mechanics: grammar, spelling, language usage, sentence
Attatched in the files section is a document full of quotes that you can utilize for the essay. They are hand selected by me from the three required pieces of media. You might just want to use information given in the Biden-China article
