Every place has a history, and those histories are intimately tied to that place’s relationship to other places, its transportation links, its resources, and its production, in other words, to its natural and built environment. A key question to ask is how have humans transformed this particular piece of the natural world. Always ask as well how people in that place made a living and how that related to the natural world around them.
This is a historical sketch about the city of plymouth NOT plymouth township. Because this is a research sketch, you may not get to the point where you can develop a sophisticated thesis about your research, but you should have developed a robust set of information about your place and be able to detail changes over time.
Sources to think of are Historical maps, including historical topographical maps, are likely to be the single most important set of sources. Census data, both published and manuscript, might give real clues as to things like what kinds of productive activity was taking place in this community.
One way to conceptualize the paper is to think of your place as going through a distinct set of eras, each with a different primary focus. You can then detail how the place changed from era to era, and from there identify the agent of change. There are two eras that should appear in every paper. You must have at least a brief (single sentence) acknowledgment of Native American sovereignty over the land; you may be able to find more details on Native American use of the land in other resources to make at least a paragraph. You should also include a paragraph on the landscape at the time of extensive European-American settlement, typically found in Michigan Vegetation Maps, as well as on surveys; sometimes you will find a written source as well.
