Ok lets start with a scenario shall we, you walk into class and your teacher keeps looking at you, not in a mean way just concerned. The teacher then tells you You need to do better, I think and I know you can. I try to teach you yet you never seem to understand what Im teaching. I am afraid to say this but, teaching you is hopeless. Later on in life you are taking a test to a very intelligent college and get accepted. You might think who in the world would be considered hopeless to teach and then be an extraordinary student? No, the question should be who was patient enough to make these students well-educated. Let me answer that question, Jaime Escalante.

On December 31, 1930, in La Paz, Bolivia the most beloved teacher was born. Jaime was the child of two teachers. He was raised to speak Spanish as it was a very spoken language. Once he moved to America he had to teach himself how to speak English. Now, Jamie had to work odd jobs when he first came to the States he started off cleaning floors and then he found himself working at an electronic company. He worked hard and eventually got to be promoted to head of ( name of department).

The school he was put to teach at wasn’t the most loveliest. It was a run-down school, meaning it was not in good condition. The students there were said to be impossible and hopeless to teach, but with Mr. Escalante, it was like a miracle had happened. He took care of them and used his techniques of teaching to prepare these students for advanced calculus.

His class of 1982 was his largest and went on to take a very advanced calculus test and all passed. At first, when the students first took the test the company believed that most of them had cheated because the did outwardly well. Escalante reassured him that the children were smart and the organization was only denying the fact that they did great because they were Hispanic and from a poor school. Months later the same kids took the test again and passed proving the organization wrong of their previous thoughts. The school of Garfield thanked Jaime Escalante for standing up for these students and teaching them who were said to be unteachable.

1988 his work had been recognized tremendously and was the thing that was spoken most of. That same year Jay Mathews wrote a book of Mr. Escalante titled, Jaime Escalante: The Best Teacher in America. Along with the book a film of his story called Stand and Deliver starring Edward James Olmos as Jaime. Many people saw his work as inspiring for his work at Garfield.

After his days of glory, he went on to teach at a different school. For some reason this school was indeed informed of who he was but, they didn’t react the same as others. They criticized him for lobbying against bilingual education. He eventually retired in 1998. As he was getting older the students who were successful because of MR. escalate were taking care of him. In 1999 he received many awards, including the Presidential Medal for Excellence, because of his contributions to the field of education. His wife and two kids had been helping him live as long as possible. On March 30, 2010, Jaime Escalante died of cancer, which he had been struggling with for a long time.

You see teachers are ones with little pay but with a lot of devotion to their work. It so happens that the best teacher had to be Jaime Escalante. Not only for teaching troubled students but for, standing up for them when the company turned them down. Now let me ask you something, would you have done the same for fame and glory or, done it for the better of future generations? He went from not knowing how to speak English to being an inspiration to the education community. We made it- jaime escalante
