Many people tend to be afraid of any kind of change that may be introduced in life. I have learned throughout the years that even though change may rattle me at the start, I always seem to adapt and embrace that change. A significant change happened in my life when I had to move to a big city 250 miles from home to attend college. Moving to a completely different environment has played a role in the person I am today.
I knew that going to a completely new city would have different challenges and obstacles that I needed to face head-on to succeed. The first year was the hardest year of my big change. I had moments of doubt and was always asking myself if this was the best move to make. Moving to a completely new city meant I had no friends or family members nearby, and no routine I could fall on. Everything was different, people had very different personalities and views about various things compared to my hometown. I had no family members nearby to visit to make myself feel at home. The biggest shock to me was that I had to balance many things such as late-night study sessions, friendships, a job, and life itself all at once it became very overwhelming.
Over the years, I think this big change has played a very significant role in my life. Meeting new people has allowed me to surround myself with different personalities and attitudes. This exposure has taught me patience and empathy when it comes to listening to various types of people I work with. This has also taught me that everybody has a very dissimilar way of seeing the same thing, and not everybody sees that thing the same as I do. Being out of my comfort zone has allowed me to become a more discipline and self-confidence person. It has allowed me to put myself out there knowing that all I would gain from that are new skills. I see that confidence when it comes to helping my church in various events, and it enables me to have that willingness to help others without them having to ask. Finally, that feeling of being overwhelmed has shown me discipline and has allowed me to fully take on different events in my life. I have learned to adapt to different situations by using my exposure to change to fall back on. This experience in my life has played a huge role in the person I have grown to be, and more importantly, it has added up to different aspects of knowledge that I can use in my professional career.
This major change in my life has constructed the person that I am today. All those various exposure situations, such as interacting with people with different personalities and views, exposing myself to different situations, and having many things to deal with at once, have fortified my skills in working with people. It has allowed me to asses a situation from various angles, which lets me connect with the person I am working with. This has shown itself when I went back to the place where I volunteered a year later to work. I realized at that moment when everything was coming full circle that my passion has always been working with people. By finding ways to understand them and with the knowledge gained throughout my experience being able to help them.
All of these experiences added up to layers of knowledge, even those seemingly random events in my life had exposed me to various scenarios that play a role in the person I am. I understand that every change that occurs in my life is just an abundance of experiences that have altered me from the inside out. Experiences have molded me into the person I am today and have exposed me to various skills that I can use in my professional career.
