What do you want to be when you grow up? was a question that was often asked when I was little. My answer would always be different when asked because I never really knew what I wanted to be, or what I wanted to do. I was asked a similar question when I was entering college such as What do you want to study? or What career do you want to pursue? It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to pursue as my career. Later on, I realized that there is one thing I would like to do with my life; make art and make good designs. It is simply my one true burning passion that I cannot and would not ever get rid of. It started off as a hobby, sketching and painting during my free time. And later, I considered it as a future career. I have always been passionate about art since I was a little, and I decided wanted to make a career out of it. In this paper, I will describe the vision I have for the next five, ten, and fifteen years in three areas of my life; career, lifestyle, and leisure goals through the knowledge I gained in class from all of the assessment findings, and personal self-growth and development.
According to the Keirseys Personality Temperament Sorter test taken in class, I am an Idealist Counselor that has an Introvert, Intuitive, Feeling, and Judging (INFJ) personality. Each of the results pertains to my personality and influences my life plans such as my career goals. The design has always let me support my creative side. Thus, I believe that my personality type as a Counselor has helped me to decide to be a designer who is equipped with creative ideas, imagination, and a profound way of looking at the world. Moreover, through Kalils True Colors assessment, I resulted in Gold where I approached my life plan in a structured way. I create plans and organize my life to achieve the goals that will be talked about in the paper.
In class, I tracked what I did during my free time in my Leisure Journal, and filling out The Leisure Well-Being Inventory by McDowell (2008) has helped me better understand the role leisure plays in my life. I found that I regularly enjoy expressing myself through art and music (McDowell, 2008, General Interests section) as part of leisure. Moreover, my leisure involvement could be turned into a source of income after I graduate. Since I am pursuing a degree in Design (McDowell, 2008, Resourcefulness section). In 5, 10, and 15 years, I anticipate changes in the use of my time and search for ways to improve it. In doing that, I need to identify first my priorities and know the difference between what is necessary and what is expendable. Knowing how to manage my time well and be productive will help me in the long run and achieve my life plan goals smoothly. I will continue to track my time daily because this, will help me improve focus, accountability, productivity, and planning. Most importantly, time tracking has helped me think more clearly about how I spend my time. I can see at a glance where I am spending too much time on activity and not enough on others and also find patterns in my behavior. Moreover, I will be aware of where the precious minutes of your life are going and appreciate how much time there really is in a day.
From the present until five years from now, I have planned my future goals. For my education and career goals, I will graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design at California State University of Sacramento in May 2020. My goal while I am in the school is to become the best at my work and perfect my craft before I go out to the real world. I will value knowledge and intelligence as my parents reinforced the importance of education at all stages in life. My education is not just about getting the diploma, but it is about what I learn from it and how I can apply it. After I graduate, my goal is to get a stable job as a Graphic Designer that focuses on User Experience, User Interface Design, and illustrations. UX/UI design is concerned with how the product looks and feels overall. UX/UI designers mainly focus on websites and applications where I can integrate my illustration art in these mediums. To be a UX/UI designer, I believe this will be a stable job that can support me and provide both necessary income and job satisfaction. My lifestyle goal is to I would like to be more involved in the design community and engage myself in art events that would help out the Sacramento community. Joining events such as the Wide Open Walls Festival and Design Week in downtown Sacramento is a good way to network as well as help out the community. Moreover, I hope to be financially stable wherein I can an apartment with my significant other and adopt a dog and I hope to pay off all my student debts and have enough money to sustain myself while engaging in leisure activities such as attending concerts and music festivals. My leisure life in the next five years also consists of checking off my bucket list one by one as I want to learn how to surf, swim with the dolphins and visit all the states in the United States.
Furthermore, I have planned my career, lifestyle, and leisure goals for the next ten years. For my career goals, I am hoping to move up as an Art Director. This management position will be a good opportunity to learn about the business as well as manage the design team. With a few years of experience on being an Art Director, I would like to start running my own design firm that focuses on UX/UI designs with my significant other as my business partner as he is pursuing Computer Science. We will be working hand in hand to make this business possible in the next couple of years. For my lifestyle goals, I see myself getting married, moving to Southern California, and buying my first house. Before I want to start having kids, I would like to travel the world, go on a safari in Africa and be fluent in 5 languages; Tagalog, English, Mandarin, Spanish, and French. My financial goal is to pay off all my debts including student loans, car, and credit cards. I at least hope that I would have saved around a quarter of a million dollars that would be invested in mutual funds and stocks. Also, I will be planning for retirement as soon as possible and generate more income and experience to set myself up for a career and give myself more financial cushion in the next couple of years.
Moreover, I have planned my career, lifestyle, and leisure goals for the next fifteen years. In the next fifteen years, I dream to be my own boss and the design firm I dream of building with my partner will be up and running. I want this company that collaborates and engages with people to make a living by expressing themselves freely. For my lifestyle goal, I will live in Los Angeles with my husband in a modern three-tier mansion with our three kids and 2 dogs, a Corgi and a Pitbull. I would like to see myself starting a family and living comfortably with those I love. Also, I hope to have gained a lot of knowledge about others life and know what I want to do. And for my leisure goal, I will travel more often to experience different cultures and cuisines around the world. My first trip would be to Europe. Thus, traveling will make me open, willing and an incredibly more well-rounded human being.
Honestly, I have no idea where I will end up in the next couple of years if my plan does not go as planned but I want to set these goals to have a clearer path. As I am in my 202s, I think a lot about my career and future, I know it is good to plan my future, but I constantly worry about it. What are the things I will do and achieve in the next couple of years I want to have a really calm mind? I have not spent enough time thinking about what I want from life and never set myself formal goals until today. The plans have been laid out in detail and I am taking steps to complete each one in the time I have. I hope I will maintain my same busy lifestyle and continue. Planning the next fifteen years of my life helped me reflect on what and where I want to be and how my future is going to look. It taught me to reflect and learn more and understand myself. It has given me a direction on what my goals are and how to achieve them. I must consider what I want to achieve and then commit to it. This is a powerful process for thinking about my ideal future, and for motivating myself to turn my vision of this future into reality. I will not accept less and am willing to do whatever is necessary in order to fulfill my dream.
