Each of the statements presented in this first Synthesis and Application assignment reflects popular ideas about language. In fact, you probably have seen them in popular media (videos, social media, news stories, etc.) and maybe you have even hold/have held those ideas or find them plausible. Your task for this assignment is:
To evaluate and respond to each statement using some of the concepts we have discussed during the first part of the semester. You will see the required concepts for each statement listed below the statement.
Your responses should use the definitions of the concepts provided in the course materials (no other definition will be considered correct; if you google the definition, you will likely get a wrong definition). You should have these definitions ready in your glossaries (if you completed them following the guidelines, you reviewed the feedback I provided for your glossaries, and you incorporated the additional notes/information that you gathered during your participation in the in-person sessions).
Your responses should show your understanding of the concepts and your reasoning about how the concepts support or contradict the popular ideas reflected in the statement (you need to use your own words; the use of AI tools is not allowed and will be considered plagiarism).
To evaluate each of the statements, you have to complete three steps, see below (10 possible points for each statement; 20 points total). Use as much space as you need to respond to each step of this assignment sufficiently.
Steps to take for each statement
Step 1: Find a real-life artifact/example that illustrates the ideas behind the statement. You are asked to find an example where the idea in the statement is reflected. For this step it does not matter whether you agree or disagree with the ideas in the statement/artifact (2 total points)
Find an artifact/example that reflects the popular ideas expressed in the statement (popular press text, picture, video, meme, etc.) and copy/paste it here. Include an active link or attribution of authorship when available.
Explain where/how you came across this particular artifact/example, and briefly explain how/why it exemplifies the ideas behind the statement.
Step 2: Define the relevant linguistic concepts. You are provided with three required linguistic concepts, and you are asked to add an additional linguistic concept that is relevant to discuss the statement. (4 total points).
Provide a quote where each concept is defined in the course materials (reading materials, videos, etc. Please note: you need to use the primary sources, not the PPT slides or quotes from what I said during lectures). Make sure that your definition is complete.
Each quote needs to have an in-text citation that includes a page number or a timestamp (in the case of videos). You can find more information about how to do this in this link: https://writingcenter.uagc.edu/apa-citing-within-your-paperLinks to an external site.
Step 3: Evaluate the statement. This is an important part of the assignment as it will demonstrate your understanding of the concepts by applying them and either accepting or rejecting the ideas behind the statement (4 total points).
Using each of the four concepts defined in Step 2, evaluate the validity of the statement. This requires you to explain sufficiently how each concept helps you accept or reject the ideas behind the statement.
Add a general conclusion accepting or rejecting the statement (this conclusion has to be based on whether the majority of the concepts support or contradict the ideas behind the statement).
