There are simple steps you can take to spot fake news. Slowing down and reviewing a few aspects of online information can help tremendously.
bullet
Read Past the Headline. Before you share or believe a headline, read the entire article for content.
bullet
Look at the URL. If the URL looks odd, such as com.lo or .com.co, it is less likely to be a reliable source. The most reliable URL codes are .gov and .edu. The next reliable in general are .org, followed by .com. The least reliable contain .co and .lo.
bullet
Examine the Layout. If the article contains typos and other mistakes, it is likely it was not reviewed by an editor. Most sources of reliable information utilize an editor to ensure there are no typos and errors.
bullet
Cross Check the Information. Search for the same information from other reliable sources. If you cannot find the same information from other reliable sources, it may not be true.
bullet
Examine the Author. Do a search of the author to determine who they are and how their background and credentials position them to provide credible information on the topic.
bullet
Check the Date. Fake news is often a misrepresentation of news from a distant time. Check the date to determine current relevance.
bullet
Check the Resources. Does the article list references? Where did this information come from? Follow the trail of resources to find the original information.
bullet
Keep your Biases in Check. You learned that confirmation bias makes it easier to believe information that aligns with your personal beliefs. Keep this in mind when determining the reliability of information.

When searching for scholarly information, there are a few important aspects to consider.
bullet
The Author: Prior to selecting a publication to utilize for scholarly purposes, determine if the author is qualified to write on the topic. It is important to utilize information written by someone who is an expert in an appropriate field of study.
bullet
The Date: Always look at the date of the scholarly literature you are reading. Is it recent enough to still apply today? These parameters will often be set by your instructor; however, a general rule is to utilize articles published within the last 10 years.
bullet
Peer Review: When a publication is peer reviewed, it is considered accurate by other experts in the field. Peer reviewed research and other publications are often accurate and trustworthy.
