Deconstruction analysis of Dawn Bellwether as a Minor character

a. Unappreciated >< Powerful

The personality of Dawn Bellwether as the Assistant of Mayor Zootopia can be identified in the Zootopia script as the unappreciated animal. The first time, Bellwether comes and joins the story, it is clearly visible in herself. It can be proved in table 4.2.1.3, most of the quotations will show you the character or personality of Dawn Bellwether in some different scenes. So, the first character as an appreciated figure can be seen as follows :

Oh, I’m more of a glorified secretary. I think Mayor Lionheart just wanted the sheep vote. Feels good to be appreciated [SCENE 24 Assistance from Bellwether]

Smellwether! that’s a fun little name he likes to use. I called him Lionfart once, he did not care for that, Lionheart calls his assistant’s name like a joke [SCENE 24 Assistance from Bellwether]

Both of the quotations above show the personality of Dawn Bellwether. Mayor Lionheart always treats his assistant haphazardly. She always gets rude treatment from Lionheart and is also unappreciated. Although she has done everything for Lionheart, Lionheart always ignores her and does not care about her. It is proved from the first quotation that her job as assistant mayor is more of a glorified secretary job. Then, the second quotation shows that Mayor Lionheart doesn’t respect his assistant by calling her using a strange name. Lionheart always calls her name like a joke.

The character of Bellwether who is unappreciated by Lionheart as the Mayor of Zootopia can be deconstructed to be a powerful figure. It can be seen in table 4.2.2.3. Bellwether is usually not recognized, has no power, and underestimated before. But now she becomes a figure who has power over everything, everything is in her control and commands. It is caused by Bellwether having replaced the position of Mayor Lionheart as the new Mayor of Zootopia.

They thought it would be better if a predator, such as myself, wasn’t the first face that you see when you walk into the ZPD [SCENE 30 Moving to Records]

So that’s it? Prey fears predators and you stay in power?, asked Judy [SCENE 37 The True Villain].

Bellwether had been promoted to be a new Mayor. She is responsible for ZPD and has the right to decide anything. It is proved from the first quotation above, Clawhauser who is described as a cheetah should not ZPD because he is a predator. The new Mayor changes the position of Clawhauser to the Record section downstairs, he can’t be in the ZPD information section anymore. Mayor Bellwether will eliminate everything about predators in ZPD. Then, the second quotation above tells about question of Judy to Bellwether. Judy wants to make sure that the reason Bellwether does all of this mess up is that she wants to stay in power, so she makes every prey in fear. And predators can be eliminated.

b. Helpful >< Betrayer

Then, another character of Bellwether in the story can be described as a helpful figure. Actually, Bellwether is a good figure in their first appearance, she likes to help others who need her help, because it makes herself to be respected. So, she never minds helping Judy collect the information.

There! Traffic cams for the whole city. Well, this is so exciting, actually. I mean, you know, I never get to do anything this important [SCENE 24 Assistance from Bellwether]

Based on the quotation above, Bellwether seemed very happy to help Judy. She is eager to help and excited she could be of use in collecting the information secretly. She mostly does paperwork and menial jobs. She is happy and can help others, so she can be useful to others. And when Judy is successful in her research, then Judy will thank Bellwether, because of her effort, and Judy can finish it well. And their statement of Judy itself is very worthwhile for Bellwether because she seemed appreciated. That is the most important thing that Bellwether wants all this time.

But, the last appearance of Bellwether shows she has a bad figure. This is the shape of the Deconstruction of Bellwether’s personality before as the helpful figure, but now she becomes a betrayer figure. She has betrayed all of the residents in Zootopia and also Judy who believes Bellwether is a kind figure. In can be shown in this quotation.

We’re on the same team, Judy! Underestimated, underappreciated… Aren’t you sick of it? Predators – they may be strong and loud, but prey outnumbers predators ten-to-one. Think of it – 90% of the population united against a common enemy. We’ll be unstoppable, saidBellwether [SCENE 37 The True Villain]

The quotation above shows that Bellwether betrays Judy as a fellow prey. Bellwether tries to catch Judy who successfully collects all of the evidence about the toxic flower. And also Judy knows that Bellwether is the mastermind of all the chaos. Bellwether tries to persuade Judy in order to join her as the prey, but Judy does not. So, thats why Bellwether has to stop Judy.
