Savills

Savills is a multi-disciplinary property company that offers real estate services from over 600 offices worldwide. Savills employs over 30,000 individuals in 60 countries.

The Savills National Planning Division operates across 20 offices in the United Kingdom and consists of 220 employees. I work in the Glasgow office along with three other planners, however, we work as part of the Scotland Planning Team which comprises 11 planners from director to a graduate level working from the Glasgow and Edinburgh Savills offices. The Scotland Planning Team operates across the whole of Scotland and covers all sectors including housing, commercial, and energy.

The Glasgow office comprises a range of departments including Planning, Investment, Valuation, and Development.

My role in the team is to ensure the delivery of comprehensive, accurate, and commercially focused planning consultancy services to a range of clients, and to support senior members of the team. Over time, I have progressively been given greater responsibility, and details on how my roles and responsibility have developed are outlined below.

Roles and Responsibilities

My roles and responsibilities at the start of my employment with Savills involved helping and supporting senior colleagues in the Scotland Planning Team. This included preparing the necessary submission documents and forms for small-scale planning applications, carrying out desktop planning appraisals to assess the development potential of sites, and conducting planning research. My initial roles and responsibilities allowed me to develop my understanding of the planning system and to familiarise myself with planning documents and the requirements for submitting planning applications.

My roles and responsibilities at the start of my practical experience also included:

  • Monitoring the Development Plans for each of the Local Authorities in Scotland ;
  • Submitting Proposal of Application Notices ;
  • Organizing and attending public consultation events with senior colleagues ;
  • Preparing application forms and documents and submitting small-scale planning applications including renewal of consent applications, retrospective applications, full planning applications, advertisement consent applications, and listed building consent applications; and
  • Attending project meetings with senior colleagues and taking minutes.

As my knowledge and skills advanced, my day-to-day work and responsibility increased. In addition to my initial roles and responsibilities, I now work more independently on applications for small and medium-scale planning applications, exercising my independent judgment in making decisions and influencing planning outcomes. I have also been responsible for preparing and submitting a planning application for a major development. My roles and responsibilities have progressed and now include:

  • Undertaking internal conflict checks and preparing fee proposals for clients ;
  • Drafting chapters to accompany an Environmental Statement ;
  • Preparing, submitting, and managing small and medium scale planning applications independently including advertisements consents, a number of full planning applications, change of use applications, and listed building consent applications ;
  • Preparing and submitting planning applications for major developments ;
  • Instructing and managing sub-consultants;
  • Reviewing external documents such as Design and Access Statements and Transport Statements ;
  • Attending project meetings with both clients and external consultants independently ;
  • Liaising with planning officers to progress applications through to determination; and
  • Managing the discharge of conditions attached to planning consents.

I am also a regular attendee at RTPI, Scottish Young Planner Network, and Planning Aid for Scotland events. I have presented to High School and University students on a number of occasions on working in the property industry.

My Personal Competency Statement provides detail of two projects in which I have had significant involvement.
