There are many kinds of beauty standards in this era. For example, in Korea and Indonesia, only someone who has white and glass skin and also a thin body can be called She is beautiful. Nowadays, women are obsessed with long legs, big boobs, flat stomachs, straight hair, flawless skin, etc.
Body shaming is an awful thing to do, no matter what gender, because it is an unnecessary thing and can injure mental health. Everyone is beautiful in their own way, maybe that phrase smells like a naive or cliche phrase, but we can take the positive side of it. We should appreciate others and the way they look because everyone has their own opinion about beauty, and we should remember that we do not have the authority to judge it. When we do that, we only waste our time and have nothing on it.
This is a very pointless thing to do. Body shaming has no positive value both for the subject and the victim. It’s not okay to bully fat or skinny people, white skin or dark skin, short or tall people, we must not tolerate it. It leads to comparison and shame. Maybe someone does not mean to do it just joking, but it can hurt other people.
Body shaming can affect the victims mental health. Someone can be insecure about their body. Someone has a fat body and can be an antisocial person because he/she is embarrassed to appear in public, he/she is not confident with their body size. Body shaming can make the victim hate their own bodies, he/she was not born to do it until this societal situation taught us to. This can cause eating disorders like binge, bulimia nervosa, and anorexia nervosa. In severe cases, it can have an adverse effect on self-harm and even suicide.
Indeed, body shaming can be a motivation for someone who has a weight problem. Not to change her shape, but to change her lifestyle by consuming healthy food. Such a person can maintain a healthy weight or lose through diet and exercise in one way to reduce body fat. We know obesity has so many risk factors, but in a positive way, it can be a motivation for a person. Overweight problems can cause many diseases like hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases like coronary heart disease, infertility, and stroke because her blood vessels are blocked by lipids, cholesterol, and many more. In some bad cases, it can also cause death. However, body shaming is only making someone feel insecure with their own body. That is not such a good solution for an underweight problem or overweight problem. We can motivate a person in other ways, more polite and well. For example, we can persuade people with weight problems to do exercise together or cook a healthy diet together. We should not comment on how their body looks. Body shape or size means nothing. It is bullshit when someone insults overweight people in order to encourage/motivate them to lose weight. Although in reality such people only encourage them to feel awful about themselves and their bodies.
Body shaming isn’t a great thing. We should not determine someones worth based on a number on the scale because their inner beauty matters more than their body shape. We are so much more than our outer appearance, we are humans with soul and purpose, born to do great things for other people. All of us need to focus on loving the body we’ve been given instead of comparing ourselves to everyone else. And love who we are today, not what we want to be tomorrow.
