Entrepreneur, singer, actress, and mother, Beyonce Giselle Knowles-Carter has used her fame and name to express many vital issues in todays society, feminism being one of them.
Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Beyonce started a musical group with a few of her friends, Destinys Child’. By being in this group it started her career and helped shape who she is today. After ‘Destinys Child ‘split up in 2005, Beyonce continued her solo career by releasing her first of many albums, ‘Dangerously in Love’. Although her success was growing and she was becoming huge in the world, she stayed true to her roots and never forgot where she came from.
Beyonce may be a lot of wonderful things, and a feminist is definitely one of them. During one of her most famous performances, ‘Formation’, her dancers formed the symbol of Venus to honor women. Several of her songs are about feminism and women’s empowerment including, ‘Upgrade U’, ‘Freedom’, ‘6 Inch’, ‘Sorry’, ‘Pretty Hurts’, ‘Run the World (Girls)’, and ‘Flawless’. Beyonce even went to extreme lengths to rally voters in support of Hilary Clinton during the 2016 presidential election. Beyonce went on stage and stated: There was a time when a womans opinion did not matter. If you were black, white, Mexican, Asian, Muslim, educated, poor, or rich, if you were a woman, it did not matter. Less than 100 years ago, women did not have the right to vote, look how far we’ve come from having no voice to being on the brink of making history again by electing the first woman president. Yes! But we have to vote. The world looks to us as a progressive country that leads change. Even though Clinton did not win the presidency, Beyonce’s message still impacted many people. Even while creating her successful clothing line, Ivy Park, the second-largest manufacturer of sportswear in the world after Nike, Beyonces still thinking of women. Beyonce created this line and stated: My goal with Ivy Park is to push the boundaries of athletic wear, and to support and inspire women who understand that beauty is more than physical appearance. She found it very depressing that up to 80 percent of girls give up sports at the young age of 13. The message she presents through her line and ad for it is that every woman, no matter their size or age, can do sports, as well as go on to achieve great things.
Regardless of Beyonce being a feminist, she also shows her love and appreciation to men. For example, for the 57th annual Grammy Awards, she had to put on a performance, and she hand-selected the men to be a part of it. She stated: I wanted to find real men that have lived, have struggled, cried, have a light and a spirit about them. I felt like this is an opportunity to show the strength and vulnerability in black men. This is also important to her brand because, it proves she uses her fame for things she believes in, no matter what others think.
Being known as ‘Queen Bey’, Beyonce surely lives up to the name created for her by her fandom, known as the ‘Beyhive’. She has had a continuing successful career for over 22 years, where she has changed many lives during her fame years not only musically, but in changing women, men, and childrens lives and the way they now view the world. She isnt just a woman with a lot of money, she sings about important and relevant things. She is a woman who is not afraid to state her opinion and her views. She can and will bring up important issues in society, old and new.
