Assignment Overview:
Professional head and body shots are essential tools for dancers seeking opportunities in both commercial and concert dance sectors. These images serve as the first impression to casting directors, agents, and choreographers, showcasing your appearance, style, and versatility. This assignment will guide you in researching the standards of professional dance photography and creating your own head and body shots.
Instructions:
Research:
Investigate the significance of professional head and body shots for dancers. Focus on what makes an effective headshot and body shot, including details such as posture, attire, hair, expressions, and settings.
Identify the differences between head and body shots used for commercial dance (e.g., advertisements, music videos) versus concert dance (e.g., ballet, modern dance).
Research tips from dance professionals or photographers who specialize in dance photography. Consider reading articles, watching videos, or exploring dance agency websites.
Create Your Head and Body Shots:
Head Shots:
Take two headshots: one for commercial dance and one for concert dance.
Use a clear brick wall or plain wall as your background to ensure the focus remains on you.
Wear attire appropriate for each dance style—commercial headshots might be more casual or trendy, while concert headshots should reflect a refined and professional look.
Pay attention to your facial expression and hairstyle; they should be simple, polished, and convey confidence.
Body Shots:
Take two full-body shots: one for commercial dance and one for concert dance.
Choose a location on the ASU campus that reflects your strongest dance style. For example, use a stage, studio, or outdoor space that complements your style.
Capture your body shots in poses or movements that highlight your flexibility, strength, or signature dance style. The commercial shot should be dynamic and engaging, while the concert shot should exhibit elegance and technical prowess.
Submission Requirements:
Submit the four photographs (two headshots and two body shots) in high resolution.
Write a brief descriiption (2-3 sentences) for each photo explaining your choice of attire, pose, and setting.
Compile your photos and descriiptions into a PowerPoint presentation.
Include a “Research Reflection” slide that summarizes your findings from the research portion of the assignment. Mention at least two sources and how the research influenced your photo choices.
Use MLA format for citations on a separate “Works Cited” slide.
Grading Criteria:
Quality of research and understanding of the importance of professional dance photos.
Creativity and appropriateness of the settings, poses, and expressions in your photos.
Technical quality of the images (lighting, clarity, composition).
Adherence to the assignment instructions, including MLA formatting and submission guidelines.
