Indigenous religions involve ancestral faiths of peoples who are local to certain regions. Their faiths assist people in attaining the objective of living well in such regions. Thus, indigenous faiths differ, just as the locations their practitioners reside vary (Van Voorst 31). Most indigenous religions and other monotheist religions like Christianity and Islam practice both animism and holistic religious practices. animism is the belief that all living and nonliving objects have a spirit or soul. Animism holds that there are good and wicked souls, and ancient faiths often used charms and incantations to keep off evil spirits and welcome the latters presence (Waldrep). As a modern belief system, animism advises dealing with daily issues, worries, and needs, such as bringing health and prosperity or getting instruction through divine intervention. Most animistic religious traditions often hold that one supreme being exists above all other spirits, gods, and ancestral spirits. This God is either a monotheistic God or a monotheistic God by nature.
Holistic spirituality beliefs and practices focus on attaining wholeness and wellness in body, mind, and spirit. Spirituality based on holistic principles emphasizes self-realization, connection, and intimate encounters with the divine (Sider et al.). Establishing a holistic worldview and set of core values is an essential component of religion. Religious teachings are the primary means of transmitting the ideals of holism in a more fragmented and reworked political and economic environment.
According to animism and the holistic religious perspective, everything has a spirit and soul. Many indigenous religions believe that plants, animals, waterways, and other natural creations have supernatural abilities because of their connection to the supernatural. In many religions, reverence for the natural world is a central tenet. Religions worldwide have protected sacred forests as a place where people believe in the presence of a supreme being or beings. The idea that God created nature and entrusted humanity with the task of safeguarding them is shared by both Christians and Muslims. Humans must treat all forms of life with respect and care, according to many faiths and moral systems.
