Introduction
Violence is a disturbance purposefully brought about by people who use threats, physical force, and other methods to harm themselves, others, or a group of individuals. Violence in schools consists of physical confrontations between students, students, teachers, or students and other staff members at the facility. These are intended to provide specific information to the people and may obstruct learning processes when they occur.
The violence could be intimidation, abuse, shooting, or even strikes with significant consequences like injuries and fatalities. For instance, the Sandy Hook School incident in the United States of America is one of the school disorders that has left many educational stakeholders with controversial questions (Barr). As such, many assumptions about the incidence have been reached, including the future strategies to prevent such. This paper, therefore, analyzes the shooting in the Sandy Hook School and further over my personal view on the incident.
Summary of the Incidence
The Sandy Hook School Shooting is one of the most incidences that have ever occurred in a school in the United States. The incident, which a student silently organized, led to the death of several students and teachers. After conducting the criminal activity of shooting in the school, the student, who was identified as Lanza, shot himself dead moments after realizing that the security officers were all over the school compound (Barr). According to the investigations, Lanza had previously shot his mother using her gun before proceeding to the school. As a result, 20 children aged six to seven and six teachers were shot and suffered significant injuries, some of which were fatal.
Although it was proven that investigators determined Lanza, who attended Sandy Hook as a youngster, planned and executed the attack alone, they could not ascertain his motivations or understand why he had chosen to strike Sandy Hook (Barr). Further reports indicated that the student in question had severe mental challenges, which have immensely affected his social interaction and his ability to carry out his daily activities. Despite being in a school guided by relevant psychological professionals under guidance and counseling, they did not pre-empt the students future actions toward the institutions.
Though the school had put some strict policies to govern the Institution and stringent security measures, the student still made his way with the gun into the Institution. The incident indicated that the school policies were not strictly adhered to by the students and that the security system was ineffective (Barr). Moving forward, the school had to develop security enforcement and heightened regulations to govern the students conduct. Though the police officers had no clear evidence about the incident, several issues are suspected of causing such. For instance, dysfunctional family activities, immoral clues on behavior, poor socialization skills, and family ignorance might be the leading causes.
Insurance providers, in many ways, have turned into the wagging physician dogs and patients who exhibit potentially violent psychological issues whose primary goal is to get people from the clinic or organization as soon as possible. Moreover, it might be caused by poor social and family ties to institutions like churches, which provide people, including young men and adolescents, with the ideals and abilities to handle issues without using aggression (Barr). Lastly may include the educational agencies that make it extremely difficult and dangerous to declare someone an immediate danger to themselves and others.
According to the author, blaming the students for firearms ownership in the Institution might not be the best solution. As a result, the author emphasizes investigating the factors that may drive students to use guns in institutions to cause harm to their peers (Barr). Such issues may include a childs mental well-being and family background. The same is supported by Liza Long, who narrated the challenges of living with a mentally disturbed kid with indications of a future disturbance. According to her, society should not overlook these issues. However, it should prioritize them to ensure the childrens future prosperity and civilization.
Evaluation
Students, instructors, and staff in the surrounding area of the Institution suffered significant harm due to the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in 2017. The families and other influential institutional stakeholders devised concrete actions to reduce violence inside the institutions (Barr). However, before taking harsh measures against the offenders, it is vital to identify the underlying issue that exposed the student to stop similar incidents from happening again. Violence may occur in schools and affect students who use drugs and other substances. The drug interferes with the students bodies essential bodily functions and could harm their brains. As a result, people can become violent because they will not act rationally.
The students personality issues could also directly result from school violence. For example, shy children who experience loneliness and rejection at school may rebel by bullying other adolescents and starting gang fights to get attention (Barr). Poor parenting-related psychological dysfunction can lead to violent behavior in children and violence in schools. Governments that permit easy access to firearms in households run the risk of inciting violence because most students may obtain them from their homes and stir up trouble in the classrooms.
The Sandy Hook partners should train students on potential alternatives to violence to combat the school threat. The training program will assist the students in properly communicating with one another and enable them to share their challenges. It includes saying anything, rapid dating, and relationships. From this point, a violent incident may be identified and handled before it causes issues (Barr). Through this instruction, the kids are made aware, and in-depth counseling is provided to assist the pupils in learning how to regulate their anger, build their character, and resolve conflicts before they become out of control.
By providing appropriate direction and managing their social lives for proper development, parents can help to ensure that children are well-shaped. The Institution should also implement concrete disciplinary measures for offenders. These guidelines will provide the pupils the freedom to behave legally and without trying to commit any offenses. In-depth student searches should ensure that no pupils have prohibited items like drugs or weapons (Barr). This will strengthen security.
Conclusion
In schools, violence takes the form of physical altercations among students, involving students and instructors, or between schoolchildren and any other members of staff present. The Sandy Hook school shooting seriously hurt the parties involved. As such, more than 20 children between the ages of six and seven, along with six teachers, were shot. As a result, they suffered severe injuries, some were fatal. Preliminary investigations showed that Lanza, a lonely student in the Institution, must have committed the crime due to mental complications. Henceforth, the institutions should now investigate factors including drug misuse, psychological disorders, personality disorders, and firearm exposure that exposes pupils to violence. To help address the issues, the partners should create rigorous guidelines and provide training.
