Every institution lays down rules by which its recognized members work by. These rules help to create a sense of order within the institution or organization. Rules also serve the purpose of giving guidelines to the members between what is right and wrong so that if punishment has to be meted, it is done within a given jurisdiction. Ethics in an institution serve the purpose of giving standards by which members have to live by. Both stipulate that the architect in his capacity as a professional should respect and strive to protect their culture and heritage while at the same time working towards preserving the environment.

Both the AIA code of ethics and the NDARB rules of conduct instruct that members in their professional capacity respect and uphold human rights.
