Many people argue that US social and economic inequality, routine discrimination, and political problems make the American Dream impossible. However, today the dream of many Americans is not luxury real estate and shares of leading companies, but the ability to choose their own way of life (Engle). The rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution, as well as various laws and initiatives, contribute to the realization of this dream. Consequently, despite many obstacles, every citizen has the chance to achieve the American dream.
The concept of the American dream and its component has changed over the years and remains different for different people. According to Engle, today for most Americans, such a dream is the possibility of choosing the way of living and free will. At the same time, the authors of the Economic Innovation Group note that the American dream lies in the possibility of economic prosperity and social mobility (p. 5). In general, these two concepts do not contradict, since most people still choose prosperity and mobility as a way of life. However, the emphasis on core values for the American dream has changed. Samuel J. Abrams says that traditional values such as a successful career or wealth are no longer fundamental, while the rights and freedoms of a person and family happiness are still highly appreciated (Engle). An example of the traditional American dream is the life of John and Jenny in Marley & Me book by John Grogan. John successfully builds a career as a journalist, has a beautiful home, a loving wife, three children, and a dog, and their life is happy.
At the same time, one may note by reflecting on poverty and inequality in the United States that many people have limited opportunities to achieve this level of happiness. However, even a difficult social situation does not mean that the American dream is dead; on the contrary, it is becoming more and more real, considering human freedoms. First, even significant socioeconomic inequality in the US does not deprive people of the possibility of prosperity and social mobility. Although according to studies, three out of five children live in low-income backgrounds, they have a chance of becoming more successful than their parents in the future (Economic Innovation Group 3,5). There is no doubt that social mobility, economic stability, and choice are limited for some people; however, opportunities to achieve such goals exist anyway.
Secondly, various rights movements make it more realistic to achieve both economic goals and family happiness due to freedom of choice, which emerged only several decades ago. Women and non-white Americans today have more opportunities to build careers than 70 years ago, and the legalization of same-sex and interracial marriages allows all people to have a happy family life. I can also note this feature from my own experience since I have already met some challenges to overcome, but I know that I can achieve my goal. Most likely, I will have to face obstacles and fight stereotypes; however, I have the freedom and the right to make the American dream in my own interpretation.
In conclusion, the American dream is alive, although it has changed its meaning. Today, the Americans replaced the traditional template of prosperity, a family with several children and stable work with freedom of choice. In other words, the American dream today includes the economic opportunity to fulfill ones desires, as well as the freedom to love anyone and be anyone. Although inequality and different socio-economic opportunities prevent many people from fulfilling this dream, a society that fights for their rights gives them the chance to achieve their goals.
