After completing the Emotional Intelligence and Mindfulness Questionnaire and the Strengths Finder assessment this week I learned that I scored a level 2 but an overall score of  4 on a 10 point sten scale for emotional intelligence and mindfulness competence. I am categorized as a relator on the strengths finder.  The emotional intelligence questionnaire describes your perception of your emotional intelligence and mindful competence (MySkillsProfile.com, 2019). As an individual who finds it difficult to express her emotions, I was aware my score would be rather low. According to the questionnaire, I am still developing. I am competent in understanding and managing emotions as well as acting mindfully. However, I need to develop and improve my ability to perceive and use emotions. To improve I can practice speaking about my feelings, and I can learn to use my emotions to make decisions.
The strengths finder assessment revealed that I was a relator. I enjoy a few close friendships and work with them to achieve goals (Rath, 2007). I do not oppose meeting new people but I do tend to gravitate towards my close friends. My top five were relator, harmony, achiever, empathy, and responsibility. The one category that surprised me was empathy, I thought it would have been my first, I am very empathetic and have been told so on many occasions. As I intend to work with incarcerated individuals, I feel that these categories will assist in creating a good rapport, so that the individuals are more comfortable discussing their thoughts and feelings with me.
The results of the assessments have provided me with information to know what I need to work on to better myself not only as an individual but as a professional. I am competent in understanding and identifying others’ emotions. I know that being able to talk about my feelings will not only benefit me but also strengthen my ability to understand others’ emotions. Knowing how to express my emotions will help me coach individuals on expressing theirs. Being a relator will help me to encourage my clients to meet new and few people to help create their support system. My experience in the jail and as a probation officer has made me realize that many of my clients have no positive support system in their lives.

StrengthsFinder 2.0 and EIQ16-R Self-Assessments: Key Highlights and Takeaways
The StrengthsFinder 2.0 assessment revealed several of my primary strengths, notably Analytical, Learner, and Strategic. I learned that I excel at processing intricate information, assessing data from various perspectives, and crafting plans for long-term achievements. These capabilities are particularly advantageous in forensic psychology, where critical analysis and problem-solving are crucial for case evaluations and forming expert opinions. The assessment also pointed out Input as a significant strength, indicating my inherent curiosity and passion for knowledge acquisition, which is useful for staying current with the latest research and methodologies in the field.
The EIQ16-R (Emotional Intelligence Assessment) focused on my skills in Emotional Awareness and Self-Management, revealing that I have a strong capacity to recognize and regulate my emotions across different situations. This aligns with the empathy and emotional control necessary for working with clients in high-pressure or emotionally charged environments, such as forensic psychology. However, I scored lower in Interpersonal Relationships, suggesting an area where I could improve in forming deeper, more meaningful connections, particularly with clients and colleagues from diverse backgrounds and emotional experiences.
Insights Gained
From these assessments, I gained important insights into my personal strengths and areas needing development. My analytical thinking and curiosity are assets that will help me engage with intricate psychological theories and research as a student. However, the identification of Interpersonal Relationships as a skill needing improvement made me realize its significance in working with varied populations, including clients in forensic contexts. Enhancing my interpersonal communication skills will be essential for building rapport and trust with clients and within multidisciplinary teams (such as legal professionals and law enforcement).
Increased Self-Awareness and Preparation for Graduate School and Professional Growth:
This newfound self-awareness will be beneficial as I progress through my graduate studies in forensic psychology. Recognizing my strengths in critical thinking and problem-solving will allow me to concentrate on refining my approach to demanding coursework and career advancement. Simultaneously, acknowledging the need to enhance my relationship-building skills provides a clear objective that I can work on by seeking collaboration, feedback, and networking opportunities. Improving my emotional intelligence, especially regarding interpersonal relationships, will also bolster my effectiveness in supporting vulnerable or marginalized clients.
As I pursue a career in forensic psychology, these insights will inform how I leverage my strengths while actively working to enhance critical competencies in the field, including empathy, communication, and rapport-building. In the emotionally challenging landscape of forensic psychology, these skills are just as crucial as technical proficiency in psychological evaluations and assessments.

This self-assessment has greatly helped me to understand my career prospects as a forensic psychology student.  Academic self, learner, achiever, responsibility, intellect, and input are fundamental to helping me succeed in this difficult field. I am by default inquisitive as a Learner, and this characteristic greatly benefits forensic psychology as Learners need to acquire new data constantly. The perspective of comprehending advanced psychological concepts will assist me in confronting the rich features of people’s interactions, law, and psychological testing.
The third theme, the Achiever, shows my determination to work efficiently and not lose energy and power after working long hours and dealing with rather dramatic and intense forensic psychology cases. This is not fixed on the goal but on getting things done and personal growth. My Responsibility theme is guaranteed to keep me committed to my professional work and to have ethical carefulness, which is a hallmark of forensic psychology. The stress on the stability of such values, such as honesty, will be essential when making some assessments (Holden et al., 2024). Also, when searching for an expert witness, one should make a systematic investigation of some sensitive psychological phenomena.
The Intellection and Input survive perfectly on one side, my introverted personality and passion for philosophy; on the other, systematized method of gathering data. This places me in a potentially exceptional position as a researcher and practitioner. In the future, these strengths will be used effectively in the following ways during application for specialized research positions in an effort to develop an overall understanding of forensic assessment procedures (MySkillsProfile.com.,2019). This is done through cultivating in-depth views of regulations and the relationships between psychology and laws, as well as through being a perpetual learner.
My increased self-awareness illuminates a clear pathway. It is not simply to make myself ready to go and study forensic psychology but to set myself up to do something that matters in the profession. Most important concepts are tied to the primary goals of self-awareness that would help me determine strengths and weaknesses and deliberately design the academic and, further, professional path. This kind of self-reflection has made the evaluation process into the tool of highly intentional and consciously chosen personal and professional growth, thus preparing me to engage in my forensic psychology profession meaningfully.
