It was really the wrong time for me to go to the beach, but I had no choice, I desperately needed silence. I wanted to escape from the hustle and bustle of life. I had enough. Thinking about the exam, my heart sank once more. I knew I could have done better. I kept reassuring myself that I had tried my best but the feeling of guilt kept tormenting my soul. Little did I know that as soon as I reached the sea, the salty and breezy wind immediately burned my chapped lips. I felt as if the whole world was against me. As the shore grew longer, the brilliantly red sun slowly immersed into the horizon and my face was aglow with the last orange rays before twilight beckons the stars.

Heavy with contemplation, I looked at the glory of paradise descending farther behind the seam of the world. Only the roaring sea was willing to understand my emotions. I knelt down, and placed my hand on the ground, touching the sand beneath me. It was rough then I took a handful of it, pressing firmly together, trying to express my pain. My heart stopped beating for one second and I could hear nothing but silence although the sea was buzzing with its dormant strength. Just as I tried to raise my hand gripped with sand, a strong wind blew and I gradually lose the amount of sand in my hand and the pain slowly faded. I finally realized that I need to stop holding onto the past. The time has come for a decision to be made. Let go and focus on the future or continue to dwell in the past. My mind and my fingers have been numbed by the chill air. But oh, not even the chill air dared to divert my focus. I had devoted my full attention to a mindset. A mindset of not giving up. As I breathed in, I was reminded of my existence. Fresh, briny air enters my nostrils and cools down my throat and a breezy wind blew across my face momentarily as if it is trying to console me of my pain. I finally understood that everything in life is compromised by the law of balance. Life is a mixture of happiness and sadness. The same goes for failure and success. One cannot exist without the other. Call it what they may, to me, it is a balance. Every sunset brings the promise of a new dawn.

The next day, I decided to put my mindset into action. Empowering myself through endless motivation and hard work, I faced the upcoming final exam with no fear. The time has finally come. It is the exam day. I decided to climb up from where I fell. I dove head-first into my passion, determined not to let my failure stop me.

Results day finally came out and unexpectedly, I was awarded 2 Top Awards across the whole country in my final GCSE Cambridge Examinations and I flourished with excellent grades for other subjects too. I was nevertheless awarded the Cambridge Best Achiever Award.

Not forgetting to show my gratitude, I returned to the same spot on the seaside. Through teary eyes I watched the sun falling behind the horizon once again, but this time it was tears of happiness and I thanked God that this day had finally come. All the pain I suffered. All the hurt Ive felt. Everything. Gone.

The next chapter of my life will signal the beginning of newer, and perhaps tougher, challenges, but through all of the uncertainty and worry, I will be letting out a sigh of relief. This experience showed me that no matter how hard life seems, we would always have the privilege to hope. I am now no longer afraid of failure. ‘My failure gave me strength, and my pain was my motivation.
