What does being a mother mean? As a mother to my three-year-old son, I can say that for me, being a mother means discovering strengths you didn’t even know you had and dealing with fears you never knew existed. Some people would say that its a good thing and others would say it’s a bad thing. Personally, my mindset as a mother is that a mothers love is so powerful and strong that it has caused my perspective on life to change drastically.

I became pregnant at nineteen and had my baby when I turned twenty. Becoming a mom at twenty years old was the hardest thing I have ever done. Trying to work, go to school, and take care of my son seemed impossible. My family was always there to support me, but from the moment I found out I was pregnant, I was determined to move in with my fiancé. I had to think long-term about what I needed to do, so I stood at home taking care of my son for one year while my fiancé was working and providing for our family. Then after my son turned one my fiancé and I started looking for a babysitter daycare so that he could attend and I was able to start working and go back to school. The impossible became possible, I just had to change a few things around and adjust to a different schedule. My fiancé and mother-in-law are very supportive, they have offered to help me so I could go full-time and finish my associates at La Guardia Community College. I have a full-time job as a teacher assistant in a special education school for the ages of two to five years old. I look at my life at this moment and know that I made it this far.

When you become a mom at a young age, the paths you can take in life changes for good, and you are no longer a teenager, you become an adult really fast. I think that being a parent is one of the most profound changes a person can go through. The change is when the person finds out that they are having a baby, it can be your first or tenth. I learned that the infant turns into a toddler overnight, and it seems like every year after the childs birthday it goes by quickly. Treasuring all these great moments becomes the most important aspect of everyday life.

Motherhood has challenged me to appreciate the true value of raising my son and supporting my family. The world focuses so much on ambition, my values now are in a better healthier stage. Over the years, Ive come to honor the privilege of parenting and honoring motherhood being the biggest struggles moms face daily. Being a mom isnt as easy as it seems, but I wouldnt change a thing in the world for my son!

I chose this topic mainly because I thought being a young mother was going to be impossible, but with help and support it is possible. Becoming a mom has made me realize that I am stronger and more confident than I ever was. Between the challenges of pregnancy and parenting, Ive been astonished at how much my body could handle as a young woman. When faced with a challenge instead of being afraid, I instead think, I can do this!. It is an empowering feeling knowing that whatever life throws at me, I can handle it. At the beginning of my pregnancy stage, I was afraid that I wouldnt know what to do and how my life was going to be as a new mom while I was pregnant. Then after staying home nurturing my baby, it was like my mother instinct kicked in quickly. I also learned to become more patient, and unselfish, giving more of myself to someone else, and being tolerant. As a young lady who was always quiet and shy, I have actually learned to become more confident and brave because of my little boy. Motherhood welcomed and changed me in so many ways that I would have never thought were possible. Becoming a first-time mom made me stronger, overprotective, nurturing, and loving all at the same time. Sometimes we get things wrong, and we all make mistakes, but in the end, we still have to keep going as a mom. The only way I can describe motherhood is by becoming a mom which means you will wear your heart out externally for the rest of your life trying to raise your child to be the best human being they can ever be.
