Introduction
Over decades, varied animals have been used to help in carrying out research and other tests across the varied fields and laboratories across the globe. In most cases, these animals are subjected to controlled conditions to achieve accurate results. Nevertheless, despite the move, many unexpected consequences sometimes emerge. One of the most recent challenges is the emergence of the COVID 19 pandemic. The occurrence of the COVID 19 is an indication that apart from providing accurate diagnosis and treatment for diseases, these tests are prone to challenges. Based on theories that have been discussed, this paper aims to reflect against the ethical treatment of animals.
The Utilitarianism Theory
Despite the continuous treatment of various animals in the bio-research, some scholars have continued to question the validity of the entire process. According to the utilitarian theorists, such treatments violate the dignity of most of the animals (Taylor 198). Most of the experiments usually harm the creatures and sometimes subject them to death. That means the entire process is dangerous and inhuman to innocent lives. In some cases, the experiment often results in the alteration of the entire genetic make-up of the animals; hence the emergence of new diseases such as COVID 19 pandemic. Consequently, such approaches contradict the utilitarian assumption of respecting the rights of the innocent creatures by killing and destroying their nature. In the best interest, the researchers should strive to promote taking proper care of animals while at the same time reducing the pain.
Judeo Christian Tradition Theory
The Judeo Christian Tradition model accepts that all the creatures were created for environmental protection purposes. Therefore, it is the role of human beings to protect, love and care for animals. As Christians, people need to possess human nature towards the lives of other creatures. People must strive to create peace and compassion for them. As a result, any form of maltreatment should be avoided as much as possible (Taylor 203). The above theoretical position continues to call for sobriety when treating the animals. People should avoid using these creatures for some of the most lethal tests that may emerge with diseases such as COVID 19. Through the application of the above principle, they will manage to respect the Judeo-Christian Tradition Theory.
Conclusion
It is crucial to accept that different animals are often used to play a significant role in many researchers. The subjection of these creatures to controlled experiments often helps yield accurate results. For example, various organisms such as mice and rabbits have been used to create several diagnoses and treatment on human health. Through well-coordinated efforts, they have managed to discover the causes of various ailments. The main reason why these animals are preferred is due to the similarity in genetic make-up with human beings.
Nevertheless, the opportunity should not be used to mistreat the living organisms. Instead, researchers should work on the best ways of handling these creatures with the dignity and respect that they deserve. At all cost, they should not be subjected to any lethal experiment that may alter their genes, subject them to pain or kill. In the best interest, they should follow the practical approach as well as the Judeo-Christian Tradition theories to protect the animals. The application of these important principles will help to promote the manner in which these animals are treated.
