Literacy is foundational to many other school subjects. Thus, it is important that special educators have an abundance of knowledge and resources to support students who exhibit literacy difficulties. In addition to having access to culturally responsive interventions for the various literacy areas, special education professionals need to work collaboratively with other stakeholders to support the literacy needs of students.
For this Discussion, you will reflect on your strengths as well as areas for improvement regarding a variety of literacy topics. You will create professional goals to improve your practice and increase your ability to impact student learning in the area of literacy.
To prepare:
Consider your current level of knowledge regarding literacy and providing effective literacy intervention. Of the following, which would you consider strengths and which areas in need of improvement?
-Being an instructional leader related to literacy
-Using student performance data to inform classroom literacy instruction
-Ensuring that research-based literacy interventions are provided for all students, especially those with reading difficulties
-Providing culturally responsive literacy interventions
-Collaborating with colleagues, parents/guardians, and other stakeholders to meet the literacy needs of your students
-Using technology to help support your literacy instruction
Reflect on those areas you consider needing improvement. Identify two to three areas for which you will write professional SMART(attached) goals related to literacy and providing effective literacy interventions.
Post a brief assessment of your strengths and areas in need of improvement related to literacy and literacy interventions. Be sure to explain each of the areas noted in the “To prepare” section.
