For your final essay, you’ll build on your midterm essay discussion of intelligence by relating your observations in that paper to one real-world example covered in class. You should explore in-depth an intelligence-related topic related to one of the states we’re covering this semester. Essay Prompt Your midterm essay tasked you with defining intelligence, discussing the Intelligence Community, and relating your observations to how decision-makers use intelligence. For your final essay, use instructor feedback to edit and expand on your first essay. Then, explore in depth any topic related to one of the states covered in this course and discuss why that issue contributes to the state being a “hard target” in intelligence. You may choose to discuss your chosen issue from the perspective of intelligence collection, planning (decision-making), or any other stage in the intelligence cycle. What makes collection or decision-making difficult? Based on your analysis of previous U.S. policy and your assessment of the current situation, what do you believe are the most important lessons for the future? Essay Examples Examples of an essay topic include Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine, North Korea’s ballistic missile program, Cuba as a MSA, the JCPOA, or any issues of MENA states that contribute to their perspective of the Abraham Accords. If you choose, you may focus your discussion on how a country’s economic, political, and/or cyber policies create security and diplomatic issues for the U.S. in the short- and long term. For example, How have past U.S. policies and actions enabled Chinese expansion and aggression in both the Indo-Pacific and across the globe? This list is not exhaustive, and you can explore any area that you feel relates to U.S. policy and the intelligence community. Country Choice While you’re not required to write about the same country as the example in your midterm, if that country was one covered by this course, you may choose to expand on that example in your final essay. Of course, if your chosen topic/issue involves more than one country, you are free to discuss all those countries. Paper Guidelines The policy paper should be written using the APA Handbook and guidelines. Do not include works in your references that are not cited. Your entire paper including your bibliography/references must be in APA format. Failure to use APA is an automatic 4 points off your paper grade. MANY online programs will format your papers for you. We use the Purdue Owl website as a guide. You will be submitting your papers through Turnitin *Note: Given that your final essay will use a significant portion of your midterm essay, your Turnitin score might be high. the instructor will correct for this by considering only the Turnitin score of the additional material added for the final essay. Under no circumstances should you be using Wikipedia or similar websites as a reference for your papers. This includes any website that allows for community editing of information (a wiki). However, you may visit Wikipedia, etc. to find other sources and references to use. Paper Formatting Your paper must be 1.5 spaced, Times New Roman 12 font, with 1” margins. You must have a title page (which does not have to be APA compliant), an abstract, and a references page. These pages do not count as written content. I use the grading rubric found below so there should be no surprises as to what you will be graded on. Undergraduate Paper Requirements: Given that this paper will use a significant portion of your midterm essay, your paper must be at least 7-9 full pages of written content (this does not include the title page, bibliography, or abstract), and must cite at least 9 reputable, quality sources.
