Lesson Plan
Construct a lesson plan for teaching the Children’s Literature Book, Displacement, by Kiku Hughes for a day of school. The grade you gear your lesson plan towards is up to you! The grade range is Elementary-Middle School (though you could probably go up to High School if you think it would be particularly valuable).
Themes: Some themes to consider are, Identity & Identity Formation, Trauma/Generational Trauma, Time Travel, Girlhood, Food, Self-Discovery, Culture, Family, Future, Place, Fear. The themes to include are the writer’s choice and can be themes not included in this list.
The format of the lesson plan is up to you, but I am looking for at least 2 full pages of rigorous, thoughtful, engaged, and specific material that is clearly rooted in Displacement, by Kiku Hughes.
You can also be more creative by including PowerPoint/Prezzi/etc.! While there is a brevity to lesson plans, please fully flesh out and explain your ideas. Be detailed enough that I can understand how you’re engaging with Displacement, by Kiku Hughes.
Here are some elements to keep in mind/potentially incorporate:
• How will you order the sequence of your lesson?
• What are the objectives for this lesson (or lessons if you choose to treat multiple days)? What micro/macro concepts do you want your students to learn/come away with?
• What activities will your students undertake in order to engage with/understand/extend your chosen text?
• Will you be creating material for the lesson(s)? Will it be written material, or a physical object of some kind–a poster, vocabulary cards, etc.?
• Will you be bringing in secondary material of some kind to provide context, background, support, or expansion for your chosen text?
• Are there key vocabulary/terms/concepts that you will be presenting and defining for your students?
• Will there be homework, a paper, or a project for your students?
Primary Source Text: Displacement, by Kiku Hughes
Secondary Source Options: Writer’s choice to include reputable academic sources.
***NOTE*** Don’t feel obligated to purchase a copy of your chosen picture book unless you really want to. Most picture books can be found on YouTube in “read aloud” videos, and this is a perfectly acceptable source to use!
***FINAL NOTE*** Do not use Artificial Intelligence to draft the lesson plan.
