Not-for-Profit Organization Analysis
During the semester, we will be working on a continuing project focusing on a not-for-profit organization’s annual report and the IRS Form 990. You will need to obtain the annual report and a copy of the tax form IRS 990 and use it to answer questions on course topics and discussions. The IRS form 990 may be available at the entity’s website or using the IRS form 990 finder at https://candid.org/research-and-verify-nonprofits/990-finder. The annual report should be available on the NFP organization’s website. You must use the annual financial statements to perform this project rather than only Form 990 to receive credit for this assignment.
The purpose of this project is to provide access to an organization’s financial statements and see how the information in the text is translated into and presented in the financial statements. We will discuss this process in class. Please ask questions! The class discussion will assist you in creating the written deliverables for your not-for-profit organization.
– Access the IRS form 990. What is the FYE date? Comment on page 1 of the presentation, financial information, and comparing this year to last year. Who signed the form, and what was the date?
– Using the IRS form 990, what do you learn about compensation and the management of the NFP entity? This is usually in Part VII, Section A.
– Part VIII Revenue: what are the primary funding sources?
– Part IX Functional Expenses: what are the primary functional expenses?
