Freedom is the human potential, the capacity and the power to act. When a person uses their freedom, they make changes. For example, when a person says, I am free because I have possibilities and capacities to act on these possibilities. Additionally, freedom particularly attains to perfection in its acts when directed towards God, the sovereign good. For instance, human freedom is when a person makes a choice between right and wrong. This is when a persons ethical experience/ethics comes into play so ones duty, personal response, responsibility for others and contrast really do indicate the persons character whether it be good or bad. Freedom makes the human being responsible for acts of which one is the voluntary agent. Thus, this essay will express different peoples outlooks on human freedom, including my own opinion, the main idea and reasoning for human freedom, and lastly some history expressing how human freedom became what it is in todays day-and-age.
A common question several philosophers ask is if freedom really exists. Not all philosophers agree on how to explain the human ability to initiate an action. Ludwig Wittgenstein, the Austrian philosopher who originated the theory of action, and other philosophers hold that there is no such thing as freedom. They believe people may pretend to have free will, but there is no scientific evidence for it. Some people define freedom as a natural right a human being is born with. Freedom is the right to do what one wants, live where one wants, eat what one wants, learn what one wants and choose the religion in which one believes, without neglecting or affecting others rights. In my opinion, I believe human freedom can have its many constraints and limitations not only in other parts of the world, but also the particularly liberal Western world. With following cultural, social and governmental ways/rules of living, one can actually be more free and have more willpower than we might think when making everyday choices whether it be right or wrong.
The idea behind freedom is how it is a philosophical concept about the human right to realize one’s human will. According to Delph Philosophy, outside of freedom, a person can not realize the wealth of his inner world and his capabilities. Freedom begins exactly where a person deliberately restricts himself. If someone is deprived from their right of freedom, they will definitely feel as if they are not respected as a human being. When freedom is guaranteed, one can think freely, go where one wants, and say ones opinion without fear from others judgment. Freedom of speech is among the most important branches of freedom. In some societies where freedom of speech is not guaranteed by the authority, the creativity of ones mind gets buried. In the U.S Constitution, it states, freedom of speech will never result in animosity among people if they respect each other. As I mentioned earlier, freedom is not a concrete right, and there are too many constraints on it. Our practice of freedom should never lead to threatening our personal security. Furthermore, we also should have the right to establish our own places, where we can perform our religious actions/beliefs.
Historically, there has been an evident proof that freedom is innate to humans and that one will fight as long as one lives to restore their innate right to truly be free. The Western world guaranteed freedom for its own people, and occupied poor nations and deprived their people from their rights, including freedom. So,these poor nations continuously fought to restore their freedom and independence. Another example is how since the time of the French Revolution, freedom has been seen as one of the most important values of culture. In our society today, we as humans are trying to improve and modernize the value of individual freedom, which we generally recognized as one of the rights of man and citizen. The concept of ‘freedom of the individual’ is increasingly used in the media, in the speeches of political leaders, and is declared in the U.S Constitution. Since God gave us freedom we must do our best to maintain and keep doing the right thing with this given gift. Among the most humiliating ways to punish human is depriving one of freedom. Thus, unless one tastes lack of freedom, then that person will really appreciate inner freedom.
In summary, freedom is an innate right human beings are born with. Nothing should threaten our freedom and deprive us from our rights. Also our right of freedom must never harm other humans, directly or indirectly. We must respect the freedom of everyone in our society to legitimately enjoy our ways of living. So as indicated in Delph Philosophy, freedom acts as a universal value. People are striving for freedom, for only in it and through it can the creative human potential be realized.
